Currently we are in search of an exceptional individual for the position of Executive Director.
POSITION TITLE
Executive Director, St. Joseph’s Children’s Centre (SJCC)
SUMMARY
Reporting to the SJCC Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the
day-to-day operations and administration of St. Joseph’s Children’s Centre consisting
of four (4) satellite childcare centres and one (1) main office, approximately forty-five
(45) teaching staff, eleven (11) administration staff and over 300 children. The
position is also responsible for supervision of staff, implementing policies and
programs in a safe, healthy environment in compliance with the NS Day Care Act and Regulations. The Executive Director is ultimately responsible for fulfilling the
organization’s mission of providing high quality, early childhood education and
programs for the benefit of children, their families, and society.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Programming:
• Manage program development activities
• Manage enrolment
• Manage fundraising and marketing activities
• Develop and implement improved methods and procedures; effect economies
and efficiencies
• Organize and manage special projects / events as required
• Comply with the applicable laws, legislation and regulations of Government
Agencies: Departments of Community Services, Health, Halifax Regional
Municipality, etc.
• Comply with the bylaws of St. Joseph’s Children’s Centre
• Plan and coordinate the Annual General Meeting
Human Resource Management:
• Manage all human resources to achieve the best possible productivity, in
accordance with the principles of professionalism, integrity and candour
• Responsible for human resource management activities, particularly hiring,
discipline and discharge
• Responsible for participation in the collective bargaining process and
administration of the collective agreement
• Guide, counsel and develop subordinate staff; conduct annual performance
evaluations
• Manage staff training activities
• Communicate effectively with the SJCC Board of Directors, all Board Committees,
Staff, and outside agencies
• Review irregularities, incidents, accidents and take appropriate action
• Conduct monthly management meetings
• Develop and implement policies and procedures pertaining to day to day
operations
Financial:
• Manage financial resources in an effective, productive manner and within
approved budget levels
• Prepare annual revenue/expenditure, property and equipment, and personnel
budgets and submit to the Finance Committee on or before the established
deadline
• Manage the approved revenue expenses, property and equipment and
manpower budgets
• Manage property and equipment resources (owned, leased or rented) in a
prudent effective manner; plan and budget for replacement as required
• Prepare and submit monthly statements and cash flow to the Finance Committee
for each monthly meeting
Communication:
• Ensure effective and productive working arrangements with outside agencies as
required
• Attend all Board and Committee Meetings as required
• Inform, anticipate and respond to the needs of the Board
• Communicate in a timely and effective manner to staff, the Board, and/or
parents, as necessary
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience & Knowledge:
• In accordance with Regulation 40(1) & (3) of the NS Day Care Act, must have a
training program in early childhood education or its equivalent. As of May 1,
2012, this requirement will be a Level 2 or 3 classification, as defined by the
Regulations
• In accordance with Regulation 43 of the NS Day Care Act , must obtain a
Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector search as well as a NS Child
Abuse Registry Search
• All employees prior to being hired must obtain and present a physician’s
statement confirming that s/he is free from communicable diseases
• All employees are required by licensing under the NS Department of Community
Services (Regulation 28 of the NS Day Care Act) to present and maintain a valid
First Aid Certificate that includes infant CPR training
• Proven leadership ability: minimum five years’ experience in a childcare setting
and five years’ experience in a management/supervisory role in a unionized
childcare environment
• Good knowledge of and experience in business administration is essential,
including budgeting and payroll
• Valid Driver’s License, as some travel between centres is expected
• Strong communication skills
Job Specific Knowledge:
• Proficiency in computer software applications (ie. Microsoft Office – Word, Excel,
Powerpoint)
• Flexibility; able to multitask effectively in a dynamic, childcare work
environment
• Able to communicate in a clear, timely, professional manner, to various
audiences
SALARY
Salary for this position is commensurate with experience.

Reports to: St Joseph’s Children’s Centre Board of Directors
Supervises: Centre Directors, Support Staff, Maintenance Staff, Program
Coordinator
Internal Contacts: Board of Directors, Centre Directors, All St Joseph’s Children’s Centre staff
External Contacts: Parents, Other levels of government (Department of Community Services, Department of Health, Halifax Regional Municipality, etc.), Private Contractors, Vendors, Other Child Care Organizations
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal hours of operation are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Additional
hours, or time outside of the normal hours of operation, are often called for based on
operational requirements. Personnel Policies and letter of direction define terms of
employments and working conditions.
